A global atlas of gender

Beyond Male
and Female

Sex and gender are not the same thing. Sex is assigned within seconds of birth based on a glance at visible genitalia — sex is what is between the legs. Gender is what is between the ears: the felt, lived sense of who you are, shaped by self and culture.

Trans and gender-diverse people have existed for centuries across every continent. Many cultures recognize and celebrate more than two genders — in sacred, social, ordinary, and extraordinary roles. This website is a starting point to explore the vastness of trans existence.
